     More IBS Information

    • crampy abdominal pain
    • bloating
    • constipation
    • diarrhea.
One in five Americans has IBS, making it one of the most common disorders diagnosed by doctors. It occurs more often in women than in men, and it usually begins around age 20. The reason IBS is so common in Americans is the amount of processed food available in the food supply. Undigested food lines the intestine and colon leaving fecal matter to build up like sludge in a sewer.

Irritated bowel syndrome is also often referred to as the following: ??? Irritated colon ??? Spastic colon ??? Mucous colitis

There are several symptoms depending on the person and the actual cause, but the main ones are abdominal pain and occasional diarrhea, often alternating with constipation. The person suffering from IBS may feel bloated, full, as the digested food travels at an abnormal rate through the intestines. Sometimes the person may witness abdominal swelling or tenderness. Anxiety can be another symptom associated with the condition, as the person is aware of the gastro intestinal problem and he gets annoyed.

If you have lived with IBS for a while, you may also be aware that there is no targeted medical treatment for IBS, only management approaches such as dietary changes and end-agents, such as laxatives and anti-diarrheal agents.

Symptoms of irritated bowel syndrome may vary from person to person. Some people may feel discomfort in the form of pain and cramping inside the abdominal area of the bowel movements or irregular and painful periods of diarrhea and constipation. However, the most common conditions are either diarrhea or constipation. In some cases, people may show signs of both.

??? Nervous stomach As far as the actual cause of irritated bowel syndrome is concerned, it is not known yet. Some people with irritated bowel syndrome tend to show signs of abnormal movements of the lower and greater part of the large intestine or the colon. The movements can either be too last or too slow.

The colon muscles operate to eliminate the toxins or waste elements of the body via contracting and relaxing as they push the undigested food via the large intestine. In order to function well, all these muscles are supposed to work well and in conjunction with other muscles inside the body so as to push out the waste out of the anus.

IBS causes a great deal of discomfort and distress, but it does not permanently harm the intestines and does not lead to intestinal bleeding or to any serious disease such as cancer. Most people can control their symptoms with diet, stress management, and medications prescribed by their physician. But for some people, IBS can be disabling. They may be unable to work, go to social events, or travel even short distances.

My personal clinical experience has supported these findings. Chinese herbs can now be dispensed in capsules, or brought pre-made, and the benefits for IBS patients is often life-changing

Nearly half (47%) of IBS sufferers reported daily symptoms, with 43% experiencing severe symptoms. If you suffer from IBS, the good news is that you are not alone, with between 10-22% of the population being affected. The bad news is that IBS can be a seriously unpleasant and persistent condition.

  • The colon responds strongly to stimuli (for example, foods or stress) that would not bother most people.
In people with IBS, stress and emotions can strongly affect the colon. It has many nerves that connect it to the brain. Like the heart and the lungs, the colon is partly controlled by the autonomic nervous system, which has been proven to respond to stress. For example, when you are frightened, your heart beats faster, your blood pressure may go up, or you may gasp. The colon responds to stress also. It may contract too much or too little. It may absorb too much water or too little.

Irritated bowel syndrome is not to be classified as a disease. Doctors refer this disorder as functional. This means that the bowel ceases to work or function in correct order.

What is Irritated Bowel Syndrome? Irritated bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder that interferes with the normal functions of the large intestine (colon). It is characterized by several?? symptoms

Enough of the bad news - there must be some good news, right? Correct. There is some great, although little-publicised news for IBS sufferers. A clinical study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1998, reported long-lasting, side-effect free results, with a 64-76% improvement rate for the IBS patients in the treatment group.

Fully a third (34%) of IBS sufferers report loss of bowel control which has impacted significantly on daily life, causing frequent absences at work or school as well as missed leisure activities.

What causes IBS? What causes one person to have IBS and not another? No one knows. Symptoms cannot be traced to a single organic cause. Research suggests that people with IBS seem to have a colon that is more sensitive and reactive than usual to a variety of things, including certain foods and stress. Some evidence indicates that the immune system, which fights infection, is also involved. IBS symptoms result from the following:

If you are unhappy with your current IBS treatment approach, again, you are not alone, with less than one-third of IBS sufferers reporting satisfaction with the drugs and remedies they use to treat their ISB. 62% of those taking prescription drugs experienced side effects, and 45% of prescription drug takers reported moderate to severe side effects.

Irritated bowel syndrome is a syndrome that relates to a group of symptoms. One of the most common symptoms of irritated bowel syndrome is abdominal pain. The discomfort faced by the patient is usually reported as cramping, diarrhea, gas, bloating, and/or constipation. Irritated bowel syndrome also tends to affect the colon. Colon is referred to as large bowel. It is a part of the digestive tract that stores stool.

According to a research, it has been proved that about 6% to 14% of all teenagers show signs of irritated bowel syndrome. The condition is more common in girls than guys. The good news is that this condition is not fatal. The condition also does not have a risk of permanent damage to the intestines.

  • drinks with caffeine, such as coffee, tea, or colas
  • stress, conflict, or emotional upsets
  • Researchers have also found that women with IBS may have more symptoms during their menstrual periods, suggesting that reproductive hormones can exacerbate IBS problems

The following have been associated with a worsening of IBS symptoms:
    • large meals
    • bloating from gas in the colon
    • medicines

Research has shown that very mild or hidden (occult) celiac disease is present in a smaller group of people with symptoms that mimic IBS. People with celiac disease cannot digest gluten, which is present in wheat, rye, barley, and possibly oats. Foods containing gluten are toxic to these people, and their immune system responds by damaging the small intestine. A blood test can determine whether celiac disease is present.

IBS symptoms include stomach cramping and pain, abdominal bloating and distention and either diarrhea, constipation, or any of these symptoms combined at different stages of the day or week.

The movement of the digested food and fecal material through the intestines and the colon is dictated by a series of rhythmical muscular contractions (the medical term for these actions is peristalsis). When a person is suffering from the irratable bowel syndrome, the peristalsis is more frequent, thus leading to a noisier and abnormal bowel activity. That is what causes the discomfort of the IBS and what may determine people to be embarrassed with these symptoms.

Medics also refer to the irratable bowel syndrome as spastic colon, spastic colitis, nervous diarrhea, nervous colon or nervous bowel. However this condition should be distinguished among other gastro intestinal disease called "colitis, such as ulcerative colitis (colitis describes the inflammation of the colon, whereas the colon is not inflamed in people suffering from irratable bowel syndrome).

People between 20 and 30 years old are more affected by this disorder and studies have shown that women present these symptoms twice as often as men do. There are four main types of manifestation of the condition: abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea and diarrheic episodes alternating with constipation. Between 10% and 20% of all the people in the U.S. suffer from the irratable bowel syndrome. However, specialist believe that the incidence rate is actually higher that the official numbers, as many people try to self-medicate or believe that they suffer from other affections and do not consult a medic.

The condition can be easily treated by making some changes in lifestyles and medication. All one requires to do is to meet a well experienced health care practitioner. • The lining of the colon (epithelium), which is affected by the immune and nervous systems, regulates the passage of fluids in and out of the colon. In IBS, the epithelium appears to work properly. However, fast movement of the colon's contents can overcome the absorptive capacity of the colon. The result is too much fluid in the stool. In other patients, colonic movement is too slow, too much fluid is absorbed, and constipation develops.

Irritated bowel syndrome is the most common gastrointestinal disorder observed by doctors. Irritated bowel syndrome is also referred to as a multi-faceted condition. The condition is due to the disturbance in the interaction between many components of body. These components are the guts the intestines and the automatic nervous system of the body that's responsible for controlling voluntary muscles including the living as well as the components of the intestinal tract and the brain.

These patients were treated using Chinese medical herbs (available in capsules). Not only were the positive results dramatic, they were also long-lasting, with patients reporting significantly improved IBS symptoms 14 weeks after treatment.

A study titled ‘IBS in the Real World' - IBS Research Findings by IFFGD, August 2002, found that the effects of IBS can seriously effects sufferers quality of life and functionality.

In case the colon muscles don't function at a proper pace for digestion or the coordination with muscles inside the pelvis or the rectum is interrupted, the colon contents would not move smoothly. Once the function of colon is interrupted, one can feel a lot of discomfort in the form of bloating, diarrhea, constipation and abdominal cramps.

Suffering from the irratable bowel syndrome can be very annoying. The IBS is a gastro intestinal condition that manifests through episodes of diarrhea and/or constipation, associated with acute abdominal pain. Medics find it quite difficult to set up a diagnosis as there is no apparent cause and the symptoms can be associated with a series of other gastro intestinal conditions.

Abdominal pain is another frequent symptom and it appears mostly in the lower left corner of the abdomen. Going to the toilet can relieve pain associated with this condition. Also, there may be traces of white mucus in the sufferer's stool sample.

Other symptoms include burping, bad breath caused by an abnormal digestive activity, gas production, nausea and headache. It is important to go the doctor if you witness any of the above syndromes in order to have the proper medication prescribed.
